Strictly Come Dancing hostsTess Daly and Claudia Winkleman blindsided the cast and crew when they dramatically announced their decision to quit the BBC show after more than two decades - but it has now emerged their exit video was secretly recorded weeks ago. The long-standing presenting duo confirmed their departure in a joint social media announcement, supported by individual farewell statements. But while their decision appeared sudden, insiders claim it had been carefully managed behind the scenes.
According to The Sun, none of the professional dancers or celebrity contestants on this year's series had any idea the pair were planning to walk away. Their announcement sparked shockwaves across the Strictly set, leaving many cast members "stunned". However, a new twist has revealed the hosts had been preparing their goodbye long before it was made public. A show insider said: "They shot that video ages ago - much earlier in the series. They've had their departure video in drafts for weeks. The celebs on this year's show had no idea - everyone was blindsided by the news."
Sources say rumours about the pair's exit began to swirl backstage, prompting Tess and Claudia to release their planned statement earlier than they intended to avoid leaks.
"Word about the pair's exit began to get out," the insider revealed, which forced the BBC to bring forward the announcement.
In the clip, Claudia acknowledged the growing speculation, admitting there had been "rumblings" about whether they were planning to leave.
The BBC has so far declined to comment on the timing of the announcement, with a spokesperson simply saying they had been contacted for clarification.
Tess has fronted Strictly since the show launched in 2004, presenting alongside the late Bruce Forsyth until his retirement in 2014.
Claudia initially joined the show hosting companion series It Takes Two in 2004 before stepping up to co-host the main programme a decade later.
The pair have chosen not to give a specific reason for their exit, but it comes after a turbulent year for Strictly.
The BBC series has been rocked by controversy, including alleged misconduct claims involving professional dancers and reports of behind-the-scenes tensions.
Declining ratings and claims of an "underwhelming" line-up even fuelled rumours earlier this year that the show could be nearing its end.
In her emotional farewell, Tess said it was "time to say goodbye", adding that Strictly is "about joy, celebration, and bringing people together."
She paid tribute to her co-host, writing: "To my beloved Claud - what an absolute joy and pleasure it has been sharing this adventure with you. You're one of a kind, and I'll treasure every giggle, every live show, and every backstage moment we've shared."
Tess also thanked the Strictly team and viewers watching at home, saying the show would "forever hold a special place in my heart" but adding it now "feels like the right time to hand over the reins."
