Former Memphis Grizzlies icon Tony Allen , once hailed as one of the fiercest defenders in NBA history, is back in the spotlight, however, for all the wrong reasons. The 43-year-old, known to fans as “The Grindfather,” was arrested in Poinsett County, Arkansas, on Wednesday afternoon following a traffic stop that led to serious drug-related charges. Deputies pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 555 near Payneway, where Allen was a passenger. What began as a routine stop quickly escalated after officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car.
According to court records, Allen was booked into the Poinsett County Jail and charged with possession of less than two grams of a Schedule 1 or 2 controlled substance and possession of less than four ounces of a Schedule 4 drug. Authorities confirmed the substances were cocaine and marijuana, respectively.

Sheriff Kevin Molder said deputies approached the car driven by 33-year-old William Hatton, with Tony Allen seated beside him. The officers’ report stated that a “strong odor of marijuana” led to a search of the vehicle (per The Associated Press).
Deputies allegedly found a small package of marijuana on Allen and, inside a cigarette box near his seat, a clear plastic wrapper containing a white powdery substance later confirmed to be cocaine. Hatton reportedly admitted to owning additional drug paraphernalia found in the car. Both men were taken to the Poinsett County Detention Center following the arrest.
Allen faces charges of possession of meth or cocaine and possession of marijuana, while Hatton was also cited for improper lane change and possession of paraphernalia.
The arrest took place less than a year after the Memphis Grizzlies retired Allen’s No. 9 jersey, honoring his gritty defensive legacy alongside teammates Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. Allen helped define the “Grit and Grind” era from 2010 to 2017, earning six NBA All-Defensive Team selections — including three first-team honors.

In August 2023, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud in a case involving false insurance claims within the NBA community.
